Employment provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to earn their own income and become independent. Having a job instills a sense of purpose and increases their self-confidence. Promoting employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities will bring more diversity in the workplace and help these individuals to become active members of society. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports its participants in several ways to pursue employment. The NDIS provides funds for day-to-day assistance in the workplace to keep a job, also known as supports in employment. It was previously known as specialised supported employment. Supports in employment include employment-related assessment and counseling, workplace assistance, and school-leaver employment supports.
Supports in employment can encompass several things. For example, it can include conducting assessments during work hours to evaluate how a person’s disability affects their work capacity, adapting job roles to suit the individual needs, delivering both hands-on training and occasional help with work responsibilities and providing assistance to facilitate meaningful engagement in work. Participants can also access assistance with managing their disability-related support needs at the workplace as well as remote tasks linked directly to supporting their employment. The NDIS also funds support for transitioning from school to work which helps young participants during their last years of schooling and immediately after completing their education. This is called School Leaver Employment support and it builds the capability of the participant to enter the workforce.
