The NDIS and You: Understanding the Scheme for New Participants
The National Disability Insurance Scheme is an initiative by the Australian government that provides funding for eligible individuals with disabilities depending on their support needs. To access the NDIS, you must live in Australia and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, hold a permanent visa, or hold a protected special category visa. The NDIS prospective participant must be between the ages of 7 and 65 and has a disability which is significant and likely to be permanent. People with disabilities can contact their Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or get in touch with the local NDIS office to seek assistance with applying to the NDIS.
The next step is to fill out the NDIS application form and submit it along with the necessary documents including the ones which will provide evidence of your disability. The NDIS will notify you within 21 days about their decision. If you were found to be eligible, you will get started on your planning conversation regarding the creation of your NDIS plan.
The planning conversation will help you convey your goals and the kind of support that you need from the NDIS. There will be discussions regarding a variety of topics including your
current supports and how you want to manage your NDIS funding. After the planning conversation, the NDIS planner will create an NDIS plan and send it for final approval from the NDIA. Once your plan is approved, you can even have an implementation meeting to figure out how to use your NDIS plan. You have choice and control over all your support and services. If you are not satisfied with your support, you can ask for a review of your plan.
