Living independently can enhance the quality of life and promote the overall well- being of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an essential support service funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that can help participants with intellectual disabilities in achieving their goal of living independently.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is designed to accommodate the needs of participants who require intense support like those with intellectual disabilities. If they have Supported Independent Living in their NDIS plan, they can access the services of trained NDIS support workers. SIL services can include assistance with personal care activities, meal
preparation, managing medication, booking medical appointments and support with community access. But through SIL, participants can only access paid personal assistance and not the house that they live in. Personal expenses such as groceries, rent, and utility bills will have to be paid by the participants themselves. People with intellectual disabilities can
confidently choose to live independently as they can access assistance which will help them overcome their functional limitations and aid them in developing their social and life skills.
